Peyton Amelia: Birth Story

SOOOO Sorry for the delayed announcement & lack of posting (I know ya’ll have been DYING!!!). Let me explain: 1. I have a newborn on my hands (Two Words: SLEEP. DEPRIVATION. hah) & 2. I had a serious spamming issue come up while I was in the hospital that shut my site down and then when I got it back up, it prevented any comments until I got the real issue resolved. A total nightmare (and horrendous timing). Between breastfeeding, pumping, visitors coming to see miss Peyton, and adjusting to mommyhood I literally had zero time to sit and figure it out… until now! eeek. But, It’s done & resolved. HOORAY. 🙂 Thank you SO much for your patience. On to the exciting news!

You guys… she is HERE!

Peyton Amelia Wiley made her LONG AWAITED arrival on December 19th, 2013

STATS: 7 pounds 10 ounces & 20 inches of absolute PERFECTION!

The Birth Story:

My due date was December 25th, but I was scheduled to be induced on Friday, December 20th, 2013 (LONG story, but I have a blood clotting disorder so the doctors didn’t want me going too late).

I went in for my doctors appointment the Wednesday before for my weekly check-up. I was only 2 1/2 centimeters dilated and 50% effaced (only 1/2 cm progress since my last appointment). I figured the baby wasn’t going ANYWHERE so I texted the family and said that it looked like Friday would be THE day!

As I checked out at the desk they said, “Kristina, we need to bump your induction.”

I said, “Okay, when do you need to bump me to?”

They responded, “Well, you tested positive for Strep B (about 30-50% of pregnancies do - totally normal) so we’d like you to go in tonight for a few rounds of antibiotics and you will be induced first thing the morning!”

I’m pretty sure the room started spinning when the word “TONIGHT” registered in my brain. It was totally unexpected. We assumed we had 2 more nights at home… Surprise, we had ZERO more nights! 🙂 Mike had actually left the appointment to go back to work so I had to call him to come back up to the office to confirm everything. Absolute craziness.

We called everyone to tell them the change of plans and then we just sat in front of the doctors office on the bench in complete shock! Neither one of us knew what to do with ourselves.

It was baby. time.

That night we packed up our car and headed out to dinner with my brother, sister in-law, and their 2 kids. We went back home and tried to nap (YAH. RIGHT.) before our midnight “go-time”.

11:45 pm rolled around and we hopped in the car and headed to the hospital set to arrive at midnight (technically Thursday morning). We got checked in and they got me hooked up to an IV and started me on fluids followed by 2 rounds of antibiotics.

The next morning (err… later that morning?), my doctor arrived at 8:30 to check me. She said in an upbeat tone, “You are 3 1/2 centimeters dilated… nope, actually now you are 4!” Ummm WHAAAAT?! She broke my water right then & started me on the lowest dose of pitocin that they do.

I’m not kidding you, within 15-20 minutes I was in SO much pain and BEGGING for an epidural. The hubs, my mom, and my brother were all in there looking at me like I was crazy. Little did they know, I was progressing INSANELY fast! The nurse came in (about 45 mins from the start of everything) and asked me what my pain level was… I looked at the chart that had faces on it and I said “8. definitely and EIGHT… please get me an epidural.” Even the nurse was a little unconvinced (probably thinking I was being dramatic).

I started throwing up and was shaking pretty bad so she decided to check me and BOOM! Whatta ya know, I was 6 centimeters dilated and 70% effaced! Yep progressing incredibly fast (especially for a 1st baby). I asked her for Zofran since I was SO nauseas and not allowed to eat. She asked me about another medication and I wasn’t really paying attention and said sure, I’ll try it. Bad idea. It basically made me feel DRUGGED and didn’t do a darn thing for the nausea, so I would have a contraction (while simultaneously puking) then when it was over, I’d slump over in a drug induced state. Good times. My nurse went to hunt down some Zofran for me (Praise The Lord) and call for the epidural.

A few short minutes later she showed up with the Zofran and the epidural dude was right behind her with the good stuff. I puked my way through the epidural procedure (needles in spines and puking don’t mix very well! He was pretty shook up.). All went smoothly but the epidural only took on one side leaving me feeling INSANE pain on my left side with each contraction. On the bright side, the Zofran finally kicked in and I stopped puking with each contraction! My nurse rolled me onto my side and thankfully the epidural meds started to work on my left side. Hallelujah! I told her that I was feeling a lot of pressure so she checked me and she goes, “Yup you are fully dilated and 100% effaced. Want to push?!”

In my mind: “Uhhh is this really happening?! We haven’t even been  here that long. There isn’t a doctor here. Should I push? It’s just the hubs, the nurse, and me. Okay, let’s do this i guess?”

So I start pushing for about 20 minutes and then the doctor comes flying in the room to suit up and I push for another 5-10 minutes and then I heard Peyton’s beautiful little screams. She was here. She was finally truly actually here. Our little miracle baby.

They put her little body on my chest and I just held her and looked at her little self! Then there were tears. Lots and lots of joyful tears. Our hearts were (and are) so full.

And that, my friends, is how we became a family of 3. 🙂

This kid made a speedy arrival just 2 hours and 47 minutes from the time my doc broke my water & started the pitocin. Is that not INSANE? Miss Peyton was READY to come out! 🙂

If there’s anything I’m hoping for in my future it’s a QUICK childbirth! Sounds like you did ok! (you know, apart from the horrendous pain and all…). She’s a cutie! Congrats to you both!

Congratulations! She’s beautiful!! My first one progressed really fast too and they gave me this pain med that drugged me and made me so nauseated. I hate that I took that med because it made me so out of it. For the next one, I told them I go fast and none of that medicine, just the epidural. It was so much better!! I’m so happy your prayers were answered. God is so good! We struggled and went through miscarriages before our first baby. Eight years later, I’m pregnant with number 4! We are so blessed. It’s like that first pregnancy finally fixed my issues. Again, congratulations. You are in the sweetest time of your life!
